Lake Taupo

A Day In Lake Taupo

Our last day of our New Zealand adventure landed us in Lake Taupo. At the heart of the North Island lies Lake Taupo, the largest freshwater lake in the area. Created nearly two thousand years ago by a cataclysmic volcanic eruption, this majestic lake offers a serene retreat for visitors seeking relaxation and outdoor fun! Many New Zelanders love to spend their summers at Lake Taupo. Being winter time (and only having a day) we didn’t venture out on the lake, however we did enjoy a few key things the area has to offer.

Huka Falls

Our first stop was a boat ride to Huka Falls! Just a stone’s throw away from Lake Taupo lies Huka Falls, where the mighty Waikato River narrows dramatically before plunging over a series of cascades in a spectacular display of raw power. New Zealand most visited natural attraction, Huka Falls is a must do on your New Zealand adventure. We chose a boat cruise but you can also take a jet boat ride or even an incredible hike to see the falls. We went on Huka Falls River Cruise, we were able to book last minute and get on but if you are traveling in summer would suggest booking ahead. It was a calmer tour than a jet boat ride but we were still able to get up close to the falls.

Orakei Korako: The Hidden Geothermal Wonderland

About 20 mins from Lake Taupo is a Geothermal wonderland known as, Orakei Korako, often referred to as “The Hidden Valley”. A surreal landscape of bubbling mud pools, steaming geysers, and vibrant silica terraces, where the earth’s fiery forces are on full display. This was a last minute find for us. You take a short ferry ride across Lake Ohakuri to get to the Geothermal Wonderland and it is something you cannot see anywhere else. The colors are so vibrant and incredible. We highly recommend you visit!

Airplane McDonald's: A Quirky Dining Experience

We had to visit the “worlds coolest McDonald’s” while on our journey through Lake Taupo! Also known as “The Airplane McDonald’s”, where you can enjoy your favorite fast food fare aboard a retired DC-3 airplane. Perched on a hill overlooking Lake Taupo, this quirky restaurant offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, making it the perfect spot to enjoy a meal with a side of nostalgia.

Being our last day of our trip we wanted to make sure we got one last hot pool soak in. You can’t find hot pools anywhere else like you can in New Zealand and wanted to be nice and relaxed before our long journey home!

There is so much more to do and see in Lake Taupo that we weren’t able to do but we are glad we made a stop on our New Zealand adventure. New Zealand was an incredible trip and we hope to go back someday to see all the things we weren’t able to see. From the incredible nature to the amazing culture and people, New Zealand has our hearts!
